My declaration made in good faith, Saraki tells Not Too Young to Run group

SARAKI-DECALRATION

The President of the Senate, Dr Bukola Saraki has said that his declaration for the presidency in 2019 election was made in good faith to young PDP aspirants, partly as a symbolic act of encouragement.

The Not Too Young to Run group had on Thursday disowned affiliation with Saraki’s declaration for the presidency in 2019 election.

The group said that ‘the movement wishes to express its disappointment with Senator Saraki for usurping a platform designed for young aspirants to dialogue with party leadership, to advance his political ambition.

“We strongly condemn this act by the President of the Senate and dissociate ourselves from this political move.

“As noted earlier, the movement reaffirms its identity as a non-partisan citizen-led movement dedicated to the defence of democracy, political inclusion and trans-formative leadership.

“The movement restates its commitment to sustain its engagement with political parties to ensure youth candidacy and democratic primaries by the parties.”

But Saraki in a statement titled ‘Our Response To The Not Too Young To Run Statement’ signed by Yusuph Olaniyonu his Special Adviser (Media and Publicity) on Friday said his declaration was ‘not intended to put the group or its leadership in an invidious position.’

He also said that though the leadership of Not Too Young To Run had no prior knowledge of the content his remarks his declaration and intention were ‘made in good faith to young PDP aspirants, partly as a symbolic act of encouragement.’

The statement read thus, It has been brought to our attention that the Not Too Young to Run group have issued a statement in relation to the announcement made by the President of the Senate, Dr Abubakar Bukola Saraki, whilst addressing the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) members and aspirants of the group.

The occasion was first in a series of Dialogues organised by the Not Too Young To Run along Party lines. The first one is for young PDP aspirants. The subsequent ones are designed for the APC and other parties.

It is true that the Not Too Young To Run leadership had no prior knowledge of the content of the Senate President’s remarks. However, the announcement by the Senate President that he intends to throw his hat into the ring to contest for the Presidency was made in good faith to young PDP aspirants, partly as a symbolic act of encouragement.

It was not the intent of the Senate President to put the group or its leadership in an invidious position. The Senate President appreciates the contribution of the group to the development of our democracy and will continue to work closely with young people across the country in order to make Nigeria a better place for all.

Moura Stars As Tottenham Thrash Mourinho’s United 3-0

Manchester United suffered a second consecutive defeat on Monday to intensify the pressure on manager Jose Mourinho as Harry Kane and a Lucas Moura double moved Tottenham joint top of the Premier League with 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

United now trail Spurs, Liverpool and Chelsea by six points and stand four adrift of champions Manchester City just three games into the new campaign.

The odds on Mourinho losing his job have been slashed in recent weeks as he has clashed with the club’s executive vice-chairman Ed Woodward over a lack of signings.

Mourinho’s anger at not being given the funds to boost his centre-back options was exacerbated by the poor showing of Eric Bailly and Victor Lindelof in a disastrous defensive showing at Brighton last weekend.

Both paid for that performance by being dropped as Mourinho made six changes in all, although Alexis Sanchez was still left on the bench.

After a week in which Mourinho’s ability to turn the tide of negativity at Old Trafford was severely questioned, the Portuguese at least summoned a response from his players for the opening 45 minutes.
United, though, were left to rue a series of missed chances by Romelu Lukaku before Spurs took control with two goals in two minutes just after the break.

Lukaku’s biggest chance came after 15 minutes when Danny Rose’s short passback put the Belgian clean through on goal, but, after rounding Hugo Lloris, Lukaku pulled his shot wide of the far post.

Lloris was then equal to a tame left-footed effort by the United number nine before Lukaku headed wide his third opening of the half.
Tottenham hadn’t even scored in losing on their four previous trips to Old Trafford under Mauricio Pochettino.

Yet, the Argentine’s half-time words of wisdom made a huge difference as Spurs came out a different side after the break.

David de Gea had already denied Kane and Dele Alli had seen a goalbound effort deflected wide by the time Kane rose highest from Kieran Tripper’s corner to loop a header into the net.
Lloris maintained his place in the side and the captain’s armband despite being arrested for drink driving in the early hours of Friday.

And Pochettino’s faith in his skipper was rewarded when Lloris denied Lukaku again with a brilliant save to keep Spurs in front.
A minute later, they doubled their advantage when Christian Eriksen’s cross was swept home by Lucas.
Mourinho encroached onto the pitch to bellow encouragement to his charges. But the damage had already been done and the final reckoning could have been even more embarrassing for the hosts.
Lindelof, on for the injured Jones, was handed a reprieve when De Gea denied Alli after a short back pass by the Swede before Kane headed wide when unmarked from another corner.

Lucas did rub salt into United wounds six minutes from time when he outpaced Lindelof before firing into the far corner.
Mourinho was goaded with chants of “you’re getting sacked in the morning” by the travelling Tottenham fans.

Woodward is not expected to bite the bullet quite so soon. But with United already facing an uphill battle just to make the top four nevermind challenge for the title, time is running out for Mourinho to get the 20-time champions of England back on track.

According to a report, two women, Chizoba Eze and Amaka Eze, have been arrested by the Imo State Police Command for allegedly buying newborn twins, Emmanuel and Emmanuela, for N1.8m in Umuahia, Abia State.
The women, who were said to be from Enugu State, were paraded on Monday by the Imo State Police Public Relations Officer, Andrew Enwerem, who said the suspects were intercepted on Owerri-Aba Road.
The suspects were paraded on Monday alongside six others, who also allegedly abducted and sold nine other children.

The police spokesperson, who decried the rise in abduction of children, said there was a coordinated operation by the state command to eradicate the anomaly.
Emwerem said, “In our ongoing onslaught against child trafficking, operatives of the command have rescued newborn twins from suspected child traffickers.

“The twins, a boy and a girl, were rescued on Owerri-Aba Road following a coordinated operation by the command.
“The suspects, who impersonated the mother of the twins, have made useful statements. We will charge them to court at the end of investigation.”

The PPRO advised parents to be mindful of those they left their children with, saying child trafficking was an absurdity.
According to Enwerem, the crackdown on child traffickers was as a result of the community policing strategies of the Inspector-General of Police in the state, Enwerem accused the six other women that were paraded of being in the business of buying and selling of children.

He said operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad in the state police command rescued nine children stolen from their parents and guardians in Owerri and Benin by the suspects.

He said, “On August 15, on Douglas Road, Owerri, FSARS operatives, led by Banjoko Oluwemimo, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, acting on reliable information, arrested two suspects – Chioma Emeka (34), of Okigwe Local Government Area of Imo State and Happiness Peter (22), of Iyala Ogoja LGA of Cross River State.”

He said other suspects were arrested in Imo, Edo and Lagos states, while their victims (children) were rescued.
He gave the names of the suspects asTheresa Asiegbu, Chioma Emeka, Happiness Peter, Martina Nwadike and Martha Ojimba.

The police spokesperson also gave the names of the rescued children as Somtochukwu Obiduba, Kosarachi Obiduba, Onyinyechi Okpala, Divine Anyaka, Wunmi Habeeb, Chisere Nwadike and one Ndubuisi.

Enwerem said, “Immediately the suspects steal a child, they will change his or her name to erase suspicion. So, parents and guardians, whose children are missing, are advised to report to the Public Relations Department of the Imo State Police Command for the identification and collection of their children.

The Independent National Electoral Commission says the 23 newly registered political parties will not be allowed to participate in the September 22, 2018 governorship election in Osun State, as the deadline for submission of candidates has passed.
This is just as INEC announced that all political parties could, on Saturday, begin holding party primaries in preparation for the 2019 general elections which will begin in February.
The INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, said this in Abuja on Thursday shortly after handing certificates to the newly registered parties.
He said, “The 23 political parties emerged out of 144 applications received by the commission so far from associations seeking registration as political parties.
“I wish to congratulate the chairmen and leaders of the new political parties for meeting the criteria enshrined in the constitution for your registration as political parties.
“Needless to add, from today, you are recognised as political parties under the law.
“From today also, you have equal status with any political party in Nigeria. This means you can sponsor candidates for elections including the 2019 general elections.
“However, since the commission has closed nomination for the Osun State governorship election holding on September 22, 2018, none of you can sponsor a candidate for that election.
“From today, you are also members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council.”

Lecturer remanded for allegedly defiling housemaid, 13

Image result for image of a law symbol

A Makurdi Upper Area Court on Monday remanded a senior lecturer at the Department of Catering and Hotel Management, Benue State Polytechnic, Ugbokolo, for allegedly defiling his 13-year-old housemaid.
The accused, Andrew Ogbuja, who was arrested last Friday, pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy and grant him bail to enable him to go back home and resolve the matter amicably.
The accused, who spoke through his counsel, David Ojile, promised to take full responsibility for the treatment of the victim, saying it was a family affair.
But the judge, Justice S. D. Kwen, rejected the plea and remanded the lecturer at the Makurdi Federal Prison.
The victim, a JSS 1 pupil of the Federal Government College, Gboko, said her guardian’s son, Victor, was the first to rape her in 2013.
She said, “It all started in 2013 when I turned five years old and went to live with my mother’s sister in Ugbokolo because there was no school in my village.
“So, when l was eight years old, the son started having sex with me and when the sister caught him, she reported him to their father, who scolded him. From there, the father also started doing the same thing by sleeping with me and l told my mother. My mother told my elder sister, who took me to Makurdi for checkup.
“Last year September, l fell ill and was taken to the Federal Medical Centre, Makurdi, where l spent two months and five days. In the hospital, they checked me and discovered that what my aunt’s son and his father did to me affected me and was responsible for my condition.
“My mother went to confront my aunt and the husband, but they did not take the matter seriously. I want my health back.”
The police prosecutor, Inspector Patrick Sunday, said on August 8, 2018, around 12pm, one Rose Abah, of Ogene Amadu Edumoga, in the Okpokwu area of Benue State, reported the matter at the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department.
He said during police investigation, Andrew was arrested for committing the offence, adding that Victor was at large.
Sunday said the offence was contrary to sections 97 and 284 of the Penal Code, Law of Benue State, 2004.
However, when the case was mentioned, no plea was taken because the court lacked the jurisdiction to hear the matter.
The Judge, S. D. Kwen, refused the accused person bail and remanded him in custody pending the determination of the matter.
The case was adjourned till September 24, 2018.
The founder of Restorer of PathCare Foundation, Enewa Soo, said the case was reported to her through the International Federation of Women Lawyers.
She lamented that the victim had been emotionally and mentally depressed since the incident and called on parents to be wary of those they leave their children with.

No cash, Weapon found in former DSS Boss custody

No Cash, Weapon Found In Daura’s House – DSS

The Department of State Services (DSS) has denied claims that huge sums of money and weapons were recovered from the house of its immediate past Director-General, Mr Lawal Daura.

DSS Public Relations Officer, Mr Tony Opuiyo, who said this in a statement on Monday, said contrary to the reports, no security agency has carried out any search operation on Mr Daura’s house.
He dismissed viral videos showing cash and other items purportedly recovered from the residence of the former DSS boss.

The videos showed men allegedly from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and some agencies carting away a huge sum of money, as well as sophisticated small arms and light rifles and thousands of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) belonging to some immigrants.

“The Service wishes to inform the public that these videos are false and should be disregarded. So far, no such recovery operations have been undertaken by the EFCC or any other security agency at DSS’ office or residences of the former DG,” Mr Opuiyo said.

According to him, the videos are the machination of some mischief-makers who were bent on destabilising the nation.

“There is no doubt that different interests have continued to give varied accounts of the incident of last week at the National Assembly.  It may, however, be recalled that the Presidency had pledged to carry out a detailed investigation regarding the alleged National Assembly siege,” the DSS spokesman said.
“The public is, therefore, advised to exercise restraint in their narration of events and as such, desist from spreading fake news or engaging in activities that may mislead or further cause a breach of the peace as well as preempt the outcome of investigations.”

Acting President Yemi Osinbajo sacked Mr Daura on Tuesday last week after security operatives barricaded the National Assembly in Abuja.

While the blockade sparked mixed reactions across the country, Mr Mathew Seiyefa consequently took over as the Acting Director-General of DSS.

Messi succeeds Iniesta as Barcelona captain

Image result for picture of messi

Lionel Messi has been named as the new captain of Barcelona following Andres Iniesta’s departure from Camp Nou. The Argentina international, who already wears the armband for his country, takes over from Iniesta following his move to Vissel Kobe at the end of the 2017-18 campaign.

Messi has skippered the Blaugrana on numerous occasions before having been the official vice-captain since 2015, but will now lead the Liga champions out on a permanent basis. Sergio Busquets takes over as vice-captain while Gerard Pique and Sergi Roberto have joined the four-man leadership team, with the quartet all having come through La Masia before graduating to the first-team.

Messi will be hopeful of lifting his first trophy as captain on Sunday as Ernesto Valverde’s side take on Sevilla in the Spanish Supercopa. And with silverware having again evaded his grasp at international level during the World Cup, the five-time Ballon d’Or winner will be keen to be lifting more trophies over the next 12 months. Barca lost just one match on their way to winning La Liga last term, and kick off the new season against Alaves on August 18.

The Catalan outfit also won the Copa del Rey last season, but Messi, in particular, was left disappointed as they crashed out of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage to Roma. Valverde has moved to bolster his squad in a bid to secure more titles, with Malcom, Arthur, Clement Lenglet and Arturo Vidal all now forming part of the dressing room which Messi will be leading for the foreseeable future.

Housewife stabs husband to death over telephone call

Image result for picture of knife

A 23-year-old housewife, Damilola Ayeni, has been arrested by the police in Lagos for allegedly stabbing her husband, Olumide, to death at their house on Bamgbose Street, Lagos Island.
It was learnt that the duo, who got married about two years ago with two children together, had a disagreement at their home on Friday.
The woman was said to have stabbed the 36-year-old husband in the chest.
He was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital where he died.
The deceased’s father, Sunday Ayeni, who reported the case to the police, told our correspondent on Sunday that the couple’s marriage was fraught with disagreements.
The Ikale, Ondo State indigene explained that he had tried to intervene, but he was stopped by some family members, who warned him to back off.
He said his son was murdered by the wife over suspicion of infidelity.
Sunday said, “My son and I work at the Lagos Island General Hospital. While I work as a security guard, he worked in the pharmacy department. They got married at the Ikoyi registry.
“They had issues many times and my son reported her to me. I told them to go their separate ways, but people said I should not come between them.
“On Friday, after my son and I closed from work in the evening, he went for a party. Around that time, he called his wife on the telephone and they spoke.
“When he returned home that night, his wife waited for him at the door and stopped him from entering. She said she heard the voice of a woman in the background when they spoke on the telephone and accused him of infidelity. That was how she stabbed him in the chest and killed him. There was no struggle between them. Their two children were taken away by the wife’s mother. She has a three-month-old baby.”
He demanded justice for his son, describing him as gentle and easy-going.
A source, however, told our correspondent that the woman in her statement to the police said she acted in self defence.
The source noted that the Lagos State indigene claimed that her husband was the aggressor.
He said, “The woman said the deceased called her mobile phone sometime in the evening, but she missed the call. When he came back home around 1am on Saturday, he queried her whereabouts when he called her phone. He accused her of infidelity and charged at her with a knife. She then picked the kitchen knife and stabbed him in self-defence.”
It was gathered that the remains of the Ondo State indigene had been deposited in a morgue awaiting autopsy.
The suspect, who was arrested by policemen from the Lion Building division, had reportedly been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation and Intelligence Department, Yaba.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Chike Oti, said the Commissioner of Police, Edgal Imohimi, was saddened by the rise in spousal killings.
He said, “Early Saturday morning, the police got a report that a woman, Damilola Ayeni, stabbed her husband, Olumide Ayeni, with a knife on the left side of the chest. The victim was rushed to the Lagos Island General Hospital where he died.
“The CP advises couples to resolve their matrimonial disputes amicably without resorting to violence which may ultimately lead to the death of either of them.”
