Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has confirmed his retirement from playing, ending "an amazing 20 years".
The 40-year old Ivory Coast striker had two spells at Chelsea, scoring 164 goals in 381 games, winning four Premier Leagues and the 2012 Champions League. He spent the last 18 months of his career with US side Phoenix Rising, the club he co-owns.  "After 20 years, I have decided to put an end to my playing career," he told BBC World Service's Sportshour.

It had been expected Drogba would retire after the United Soccer League Cup final earlier this month, with his last game a 1-0 defeat by Louisville City in the final of the United States' second tier.

"It's the best way to end, helping some young talent to develop. To give something back to the game was the best way to finish as I have learned so much in the game." Drogba did not play top-flight football until the age of 23, when French side Guingamp signed him from Ligue 2 Le Mans in January 2002.

He moved to Marseille 18 months later and the following year completed a reported £24m move to Chelsea, where he had the best spell of his career.
Drogba won three Premier League titles in his first eight years at Chelsea, including in each of his first two seasons in England, as well as four FA Cups and two League Cups.  He also won the Premier League Golden Boot in 2006-07 and 2009-10.

He left on a high, scoring the winning penalty in the Champions League final shootout against Bayern Munich.  Drogba then spent six months with Shanghai Shenhua and a year and a half with Galatasaray before returning to Chelsea.

He scored seven goals in 2014-15, winning a fourth Premier League title and a third League Cup, leaving the club as their fourth highest scorer of all time.  In 2015, he joined Major League Soccer side Montreal Impact and then became player-owner of Phoenix Rising. He scored 65 times in 105 caps for the Ivory Coast, playing in three World Cups and being named African Footballer of the Year twice.

APC vows to win 30 states in 2019

The chairman of South West national peace and reconciliation committee of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and Governor of Borno State, Kashim Shettima, has boasted that the party was positioned to win 30 states in the 2019 general elections.

He disclosed this on Wednesday when the APC national chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, inaugurated the committees headed by six governors in different geo-political zones to address the post-primary elections disputes in the party.

Shettima, who said ‘contest for power was not a tea party’, added that the maturity with which it was handled was very important.

“We are in control of 23 states. Such hiccups are inevitable in every political dispensation. We will try our best to reconcile aggrieved members.

“Collective interests should supersede our own interests. And our interest is to ensure that President Buhari wins. We want to ensure we have 30 states,” he added.

Earlier, Comrade Oshiomhole, said the National Peace and Reconciliation Committees for each of the six geo-political zones were constituted to find ‘in-house solution’ to the challenges facing the party.
Oshiomhole, who said the committees were free to consult them on new issues arising to proffer solutions, added that the terms of reference given to them were amenable.

How Jega’s INEC Conspired Against Me In 2015 – Jonathan Reveal

Ex-President, Goodluck Jonathan has insinuated that a vast conspiracy by the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC was partly responsible for his loss in 2015.

Jonathan, who was the candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP  lost to President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC on March 31st 2015, marking the first time an opposition party wins an election in Nigeria.

In his book, ‘My Transition Hours’ launched in Abuja on Tuesday, Jonathan wrote;

“For some inexplicable reason, the INEC had been able to achieve near 100% distribution of Permanent Voter Cards in the North, including the North East, which was under siege with Boko Haram insurgency but failed to record a similar level of distribution in the South which was relatively more peaceful,”.
“Social media was filled with all manner of stories, pictures and videos. I had settled in my mind that I was not going to be the sitting president pointing out these infractions and accusing the opposition and the very INEC I helped to strengthen.

“The world saw my ordeal at the polling unit in my community in Bayelsa State, where the card reader refused my PVC even after we tried repeatedly during accreditation.
“And it was the same with my wife and my mother. It was a moment that exposed the shortcomings of INEC”.

Mr Jonathan said even though he conceded defeat because of personal principles he had long held, he was even more conscious of past predictions of the United States intelligence that Nigeria would break apart.

“I knew what was coming the day before I called General Muhammadu Buhari. I had reports on the polls around the country. It was clear the results were not going to favour me. There were series of problems with card readers, resulting from widespread technical hitches leading to the non-uniform application throughout the country.

“However, I was heading towards peace. Stopping the election on voting day would have been like detonating an atomic bomb,” he said.

Mr Jonathan said shortly after he finished voting on March 28, he departed Bayelsa for Abuja to monitor the rest of the exercise from March 29 until he made concession call on March 31.

APC loses 2 House of Reps members

Two All Progressive Congress (APC) members of the House of Representatives have resigned their membership of the ruling  party with one defecting to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).

The lawmakers announced their resignations in two separate letters to the green chambers, which were read on the floor of the house on Wednesday by the Speaker, Mr Yakubu Dogara.

Rep. Babatubde Kolawale, representing Akoko North East/West Federal Constituency in Ondo, in his letter, announced that he was defecting to the PDP.

However, Rep. Mukaila Kazzim, representing Abeokuta North/Obafemi-Owode/ Odeda Federal Constituency of Ogun, did not state the party he would join.

In the letters, both lawmakers made references to irreconcilable issues relating to the party primaries as part of the reasons for the resignation and defection.
Kazzim stated that “god-fatherism” played a vital role in the emergence of candidates to represent the party in the 2019 general elections.

He said that the phenomenon was not only undemocratic but against relevant sections of the Constitution.
The legislators said after due consultations with their constituents, it was time for them to part ways with the APC.

74-Year-Old Man Rapes Teenage Girl In Warri, Infects Her With Disease

A human rights activist has revealed his displeasure over a case of a 74-year-old who raped a teenage girl in Warri area of Delta state.

It was reported that the septuagenarian identified as John Obi had carnal knowledge of the 14-year-old girl and infected her with sexually transmitted disease.

The activist, Israel Joe took to Facebook to lament as the case is being stalled because the girl’s parents want out of court settlement with the suspect.
The suspect is currently in police custody and the victim is being treated.
Read the report shared below

I received a call at about 10am this morning from a woman comrade telling me how a 74 year old man named John Obi who resides at Warri Area of Delta State defiled a 14 years old girl. At first I declined because a lot of cases that has to do with defilement/rape are always been truncated because complainants turn out towards settling out of court.

She insisted I lend my voice by calling the police and ensuring the man is prosecuted. I called the DPO who told me the had minuted that the case be charged to court. On getting there, it was the same story of settlement. I was angry but helpless not because the complainants will not appear in court but because the girl according to medical report was infested with some sexually transmitted infections.

Attempting to detain the parents for conspiracy also met a deadlock. I can’t be calm buy to thank the police for their roles and all efforts made. John Obi is presently at detention right now and treatment has commenced for the little girl.

Something is fundamentally wrong with this society. I’m not happy at all.

Ogun PDP questions Kashamu’s guber candidacy

Ogun State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has questioned  Senator Buruji Kashamu as its governorship candidate for the 2019 general elections.

In a statement by the Media Consultant to Ogun State Chapter of PDP, Mr. Afolabi Orekoya said: ” In a swift reaction to the public declaration by Senator Kashamu that the name of Leke Shittu has been substituted for his own as the governorship candidate of  PDP in Ogun State.

“It will be recalled that the name of Leke Shittu was published two weeks ago by INEC as the governorship candidate of PDP in Ogun State.

“Senator Kashamu who is representing Ogun East Senatorial District of Ogun State cannot be the party’s candidate in the State as he is no longer a member of PDP.
He urged all PDP members in Ogun State to discountenance the political shenanigan of Kashamu.

“The only recognized faction of PDP in Ogun State is that of the Sikirulai Ogundele led executives which produced Ladi Adetutu as the governorship candidate of Ogun State. It is expected that the matter of recognition before the appellate and the Supreme courts will soon be determined. We are also optimistic that the name of the authentic PDP candidate in the state in the person of Hon. Oladipupo Adebutu will then be published by INEC”.

Fire Raze 156 Shops In Aba Market

Fire on Saturday gutted about 156 shops at the timber and furniture section of Nkwo Ngwa market in Aba South Local Government Area of Abia, leaving many families in grief for their losses.

The Chairman of the market traders’ association, Okechukwu Lawrence, told NAN at the market on Sunday that he was informed about the incident through phone call around 7:00 pm on Saturday.

Lawrence said he rushed to the scene immediately and he and the market’s taskforce members broke its gates to let in sympathisers to help quench the fire, using water from a borehole.
“We tried our best before the Fire Service came in. We used water from our borehole to quench the fire.
“But the hoodlums around later broke the borehole in their bid to steal our pump while the fire was raging.
“That was how I saw it yesterday. The fire was too much and it gulped millions of Naira worth of goods and property.
“We have some building material sellers in all these front shops. The second row of shops is occupied by furniture sellers and dealers in other things.
“We recorded a very big loss here but there was no loss of life or injury,” he said.
Lawrence also debunked claims that his members attacked the fire service personnel who came to quench the fire.

The chairman said that it was a group of hoodlums called Aroo Boys who attacked the fire service men.
He said the Aroo Boys further entered the market, broke into shops, carried rice, stock fish, clothes and other property and left.

He further said the fire could have been stopped with the help of the fire fighters before it destroyed up to 100 shops.

The Abia Police Commissioner, Chris Ezeike, who visited the scene Sunday morning, said he was there to access the incident and sympathise with the victims.

Ezeike noted that the section of the market was full of inflammable materials.
He, however, called for calm and peace, adding that the fire incident, which was said to have caused by a generating set, would be investigated immediately.

Capt. Awa Udonsi (rtd.), Senior Special Adviser to Gov. Okezie Ikpeazu on Security, said he had been notified about the incident and would involve the concerned ministries in the matter.
Udonsi said he would not take decisions for the governor but assured that government would “do the right thing” in the situation.

I Became A Criminal To Satisfy My Wife – Armed Robbery Suspect Confesses

A 38-year-old suspected robber, Ibrahim Kazeem, has confessed that he took to crime in order to satisfy his wife who was persistently demanding money from him. Kazeem was recently arrested by operatives of the Federal Special Anti-Robbery Squad (FSARS), Lagos State Police Command.

He is the leader of a four-man robbery gang, which specialized in beating up their victims before pushing them out of moving vehicles

The suspect, who claimed to have abandoned his job as a commercial bus driver for robbery, said: “I am from Okeho town in Kajola Local Government Area, Oyo State, but I was born in Ajegunle, Lagos State.

‘’I am the first child of my parents, who are now late. One of my brothers is a 500 level Industrial Chemistry student in one of the universities in Nigeria. Another one is in secondary school, while two others are learning handiwork here in Lagos; I am the one taking care of them.

‘’My problems started when I married my wife. She gave me children(sic), but she did not obey me. Instead, she continued to make more demands that overstretched me. Instead of cutting her coat according to her size, she would tell me to do what real men do, no matter the risk.

‘’There was one soup I told her that I used to do charm, and that on no account must she touch it. When I went to work, she went and destroyed the charm, despite my warning to her that if the soap is destroyed I would die. Having realized that she had no value for my life, coupled with too many demands from her, I sent her away from my house.’’

He said his estranged wife relocated to Ojo, where she got a new apartment and now lives with his children.

‘’This overstretched me because I am still taking care of my children. As a commercial driver, I used to go home everyday with two or three thousand naira after delivery of five thousand naira to the owner of the bus, yet it was not enough to take care of my family.

‘’I was still managing (as a commercial driver) until one of my friends named Tijani and my conductor brought the idea to rob people and make quick money. They called it advanced pickpocket work. It is different from ‘one chance’ because we don’t use force or weapon to collect phones and money from victims.

‘’This is what we do; the conductor and Tijani, would start haggling the fare while the bus is on motion. As the argument becomes heated, members of the gang who posed as passengers would start disposessing passengers of their phones and money.

“On October 30 October, 2018, along Surulere area, we did not know who alerted the Lagos State Police Commissioner, Mr Edgal Imohimi, and he directed the officer in charge of FSARS, Mr Peter Gana, to pursue us.

‘’We were robbing some victims, when the victims raised the alarm that attracted FSARS operatives, hence, they arrested us.’’

Meanwhile, another suspect, Andrew Hezekiah, 29, from Ugheli, Delta State, said his gang was different from Kazeem’s gang. He gave the names of his gang members as, Tajudeen(the conductor, now at large); Yusuf and Sikiru Tajudeen.

Hezekiah said: “ I have been to prison for the same ‘one chance’ operation two years ago. This boy, Tajudeen is a bad friend. He joined the gang on his own. He had no problem before he joined the gang.
‘’I have  robbed more than five times, but I haven’t saved up to N50,000, because of the type of life we; we live as if there is no tomorrow.

In his confession, Tajudeen said: ’’I am from Ibadan, but Oga Hezekiah wanted to assist me with a sum of N10,000 which my sister needed urgently as a  student, but instead of helping me, he lured me into his gang.

‘’I have followed them to work (operation) more than five times, but I did not save up to five thousand naira as I am talking to you.’’
Police source said the suspects would be charged to court at the end of the investigation.

“I’m not unmindful that the National Assembly and the Presidential campaign starts today, I will employ candidates to go about the campaigns peacefully and decently.
“We have no other country, let us not set it ablaze because of politics,’’ he said.

He observed that the next four years would be quite significant as the country was faced with a choice to keep building a new Nigeria- making a break from its tainted past which favoured an opportunistic few.

The president said: “We are committed to deepening the work we started this first time such that the nation’s assets and resources continue to be organised and utilised to do good for the majority of our people.

“Our choices will shape us – our economic security and our future prosperity.
According to him, Nigeria, more than ever before, needs a stable and people-focused government to move the agenda for the country forward.

2 beheaded in Rivers community

The discovery of two human heads at a junction in Choba community, Obio/Akpor Local Government Area of Rivers State, yesterday, created panic among residents.

A source confirmed that residents of the area woke up yesterday morning to see two male heads displayed at a popular SDA Junction in Choba.

The state Police Command said the killing is unrelated to supremacy fight among two cult groups in the area, as residents had raised the alarm over increased killings and other criminal activities recently.
It was gathered that the bodies of the men, who are yet to be identified, were found around Ogor Street along Igbogo Road, while their heads were discovered at SDA Junction.

The youth Chairman of Choba community, Francis Ihunda, said: “Choba people woke up this morning (yesterday) to discover two heads at SDA Junction. It was difficult identifying the victims since their heads were removed from their bodies.”

Ihunda disclosed that Police have picked the heads and the bodies for further investigation, even as he called on the security operatives to redouble efforts to put an end to senseless killings in the community.
Meanwhile, the paramount ruler of Choba, His Royal Highness, Eze Raymond Wokocha, has condemned the development, calling for improved security in the community.

Wokocha said the community had vigilante, but that cultists started operating freely when they were disbanded by the state government, calling on the relevant authorities to allow Choba operate its own vigilante body to end cult killings.

He also called on the state government to deploy Neighbourhood Watch officials to the community.
They were cultists—Police

Meanwhile, the Public Relations Officer of the state command, Nnamdi Omoni, said the Police have identified the victims as members of the Deygbam cult.

Omoni said an investigation into the incident and hunt for the killers have commenced, adding that no arrest has been made, but that normalcy has returned to the area.

Omoni said: “This morning (yesterday) the Command was greeted with the news that two bodies were beheaded in Choba. When men of the Choba Division got to the scene of the incident, they saw the two heads and information from the locals there led us to where we recovered the bodies.

“Immediately, our men took the bodies to the mortuary. As we speak, we have been able to identify one of the corpses.
“Information on the ground has it that members of the Icelander attacked members of Deygbam cult and killed them.
“Those ones that were killed were also members of a secret cult. Their fight for supremacy led to the two deaths recorded.”

Why We Gave Up On Impeachment Of Saraki & Dogara At NASS - Moghalu

While speaking in an interview, National Auditor of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Dr. George Moghalu, admitted that the rigid stipulations for the impeachment of the leadership of the National Assembly, compelled the ruling party to give up the plan to impeach Bukola Saraki and Yakubu Dogara.

Moghalu disclosed that though it was the desire of the party to impeach the Senate President, and Speaker of the House of Representatives, the prevailing circumstance has made it impossible.

When asked if the APC had given up on the removal of the National Assembly leadership, Moghalu said: “The situation is not about given up, the present reality is that as a law-abiding party, one thing is the wish, while another is the act itself.

“We wish to have the leadership of the two chambers as a party, but the point is that the reality on ground will not make it achievable.

“Considering the prevailing reality, the possibility of changing the leadership of the two chambers is not there, because we need the required number to so.

“Don’t forget that we are in a constitutional democracy. We may be left with no other option than to live with the current situation because we don’t have another choice.

“However, my simple appeal is that the common denominator is the unity of Nigeria.
“We must all be accountable to the country. We have to place Nigeria first in whatever we do, whether we are in the opposition or ruling parties,” he said.
