                     POLICE ARREST 34 SUSPECT OVER IJEBU-IGBO CULT VIOLENCE

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested no fewer than 34 suspects in connection with the deadly cult violence that rocked Ijebu-Igbo in Ijebu North Local Government Area of the state.
The violence, which erupted on Sunday evening and escalated till Monday, resulted in the death of six persons, including a police inspector and a member of the Oodua Peoples Congress (OPC)

Several other persons reportedly sustained injuries in the mayhem which prompted the deployment of soldiers and armed policemen to restore peace to the town.
The state Police Public Relations Officer, Abimbola Oyeyemi, who confirmed the arrest of the suspects in a statement yesterday, said arms and assorted charms were also recovered from them.
He said the Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered 24-hour surveillance patrol of the town and its environs.
Oyeyemi, an Assistant Superintendent of Police, stated that operatives of the state command broke into the enclaves of the warring groups in Ijebu-Igbo before effecting the arrest.
According to him, 29 suspects were arrested on Monday while five others were apprehended yesterday (Tuesday)
The police spokesman added that the combing of the various hideouts of the hoodlums was in progress.
He said, “Following the bloody clash between the OPC and Aye cult group which claimed the lives of a police inspector and three others, men of the command have been able to break into the enclaves of the the two groups where 29 suspects were arrested and a pump action gun and one locally made pistol was recovered.
“The combing of the various hideouts of the hoodlums is in progress and as of this morning, five more suspects have been arrested with pump action gun, two locally made pistols ten live cartridges and assorted charms.”
Oyeyemi assured members of the public to go about their lawful business, stressing that adequate security measures had been put in place.
He said, “The command hereby assure members of the public of their security and advise them to go about their lawful business without fear of harassment or intimidation from any quarter.

“The command is resolute in its determination to bring to book all those who are directly or indirectly linked to the fracas no matter how highly placed such persons may be, and while we are doing that, no innocent person will be unjustly punished.
“The Commissioner of Police, Ahmed Iliyasu, has ordered 24 hr surveillance patrol of the town and its environs. He equally directed that the Area Commander Ijebu-Ode should be coordinating the police operation in the town.
“The CP gave the directive when he visited the trouble town today (yesterday) for on the spot assessment of the town.”
